A California Native American group’s proposed ballot initiative could bring in a significant amount of money for the state, but it would also come with increased expenses, according to a recent report.
The state’s budget office, the Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO), examined the measure, which was put forth by a group of 18 tribes last fall. The LAO’s assessment of the potential effects was mixed.
The LAO noted that it’s uncertain how much money would be spent on gambling if the state permits this expansion, but sports betting could generate tens of millions of dollars annually.
The proposal would not only allow sports betting at tribal casinos and state-run racetracks, but it would also grant tribal operators the right to offer roulette and dice games. At present, tribal casinos are only permitted to offer slot machines, lottery games, and specific card games.
